Happy Autumn or Happy Harvest Ideas for Christians
Some people don't believe in celebrating Halloween. It is often hard for children when all of their friends are getting so excited about it. There is no reason for them to miss out on all the fun. You can have a Happy Autumn or Happy Harvest celebration instead.
Decorating is easy. Just stick to the basics. Uncut pumpkins, gourds, squash, hay bales, corn stalks, Indian corn, mums, colored leaves and scarecrows all make good decorations. Window clings with leaves, acorns, and scarecrows are sold in many places. Children can make a lot of their own decorations with construction paper or felt material. To make decorations water proof, cover with Contact adhesive plastic. Another perk to these decorations is that they will fit right in with Thanksgiving.
There are a lt of fun places to go and things to do with the kids. Many places offer corn mazes, the apple or pumpkin farm, and hayrides. Some towns and schools have fall festivals.
You can also make your own fun. Take a walk and pick up pretty leaves. This is a good time to teach children names of different kinds of trees and to show them all of the different seeds that grow on them. it's also a good time to teach the kids new Bible verses. Some verses that talk about a harvest are Genesis 8:22, 2 Corinthians:10, James 3:18, and Luke10:2.
Have a bonfire and roast hot dogs and marshmallows and sing songs. Invite some friends and make it a party.
Or you can have a Harvest party. Serve seasonal treats like popcorn balls, candy apples, pumpkin pie or pumpkin bread, leaf shaped cookies, and apple cider. Play games like bobbing for apples, pass the apple, or hot potato. You can also modify other games, like Bingo into Autumn Bingo or trivia games into Bible Trivia games. Show the movies "Joseph, King of Dreams" and "The Prince of Egypt." You could instead have story time and read stories from the Bible, like Genesis 41:39-49, the story of Joseph and the harvest, Matthew 13:1-23, the parable of the sower, or Ruth 1 and 2:1-11. If you want a costume party, have everyone dress up as a Bible character. You could have a contest to see who has the best costume. Another party favorite is a scavenger hunt. It could have either a fall theme or a Bible theme.
When trick-or-treaters come knocking on your door, it is a wonderful opportunity to witness for the Lord. You can give each child a few pieces of candy, and maybe a Bible story, or a pencil with a Bible verse on it. You can find a lot of little inexpensive trinkets at a Christian bookstore.
Autumn is an awesome time of year. God made it for us to enjoy, so have some fun with it.
