I love all of the holidays, but Christmas is my favorite. It makes me sad that so many people forget that it's a celebration of the birth of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. Some will argue that it isn't even His real birthday. That's true. Nobody knows when Jesus was born. Some believe it was in the spring or summer. That could be true. Many argue that our beloved Christmas traditions are of pagan origin. That's also true. The newly converted Christians didn't want to give up their colorful and festive holiday traditions. The church was wise enough to to see the problem and offer a solution. They started a new holiday close to the old, to honor the birth of Jesus, as told in the books of Matthew and Luke in the New Testament of the Bible. They gave new meanings to old symbols and customs. They named it Christs Mass. The people embraced the new holiday and many of us celebrate it still today. UFO?

 I wish I had wrote down the dates, but it didn't occur to me at the time. It was in the late1980's or early 1990's. My sister, my three children, and I were going to our home in Adams County, Ohio from a visit at Mamaw Spencer's house in Morrow, Ohio. It was really late at night. There was a bright light in the sky. At first we didn't think much about it.  It seemed as if the light was following us, even when we turned on different highways and roads. When we got to Wildcat Road, on the edge of Brown and Adams County,  just a few miles from home, it was still overhead and we were starting to wonder about it. When I turned onto Wildcat Road, whatever it was exploded in the sky. My sister and one of my daughters saw it, too. As soon as we got home we turned on the television. Hagios Nikolaos was born during the third (some say fourth) century in the city of Patarain, Lycia, a province of Asia Minor. It was a Greek city at the time, and close to the sea. He was an only son and lived with his parents in Myra, Lycia, (part of modern-day Demre, Turkey). We are told by some that his parents were named Epiphanius (Ἐπιφάνιος) and Johanna (Ἰωάννα). Other sources say his parents were Theophanes (Θεοφάνης) and Nonna (Νόννα). His parents were wealthy Christians who were bringing their son up to be a good Christian, also. They died during an epidemic, leaving Hagios a rich orphan. He was raised by his uncle who was also named Nikolaos. Uncle Nikolaos was the bishop of Patara. Possibly due to his upbringing, Hagios was deeply religious from a young age. They say he even observed the canonical fasts of Wednesdays and Fridays.
