Tissue paper sun catchers are easy to make and cost very little. They are also a great hit with your little crafters. I help my granddaughter, E, make a craft almost everyday. It's also a good way to recycle scrap paper, paper bags, and torn or crumpled tissue paper from gift bags. (I also reuse my gift bags.)
E and I are making a turkey. Start out by making a pattern on scrap paper. If you are not an artist, trace your turkey from a book or print a couple of copies off the computer. I did. You may need to improvise some to get the pattern just the way you want it. Don't worry if it's not perfect. I've seen a lot of turkeys, and believe me, they are anything but perfect. Now ladies, I'm not talking about the men!
Next trace your pattern on brown paper. A brown paper bag or construction paper work fine. Double the paper when you cut out your shapes. You need two of everything except feet. Cut windows in the tail pieces.
Lay your two turkey bodies side by side on waxed paper. This helps keep your work area clean and the glue won't stick as bad on it. Glue, draw, or paint on the details of the turkey's head and body. Set aside.
Next mix up half glue and half water. You won't need very much. Lay the turkey tail a on waxed paper. Tear off small pieces and place them over the windows in the turkey tail. Overlap the different colors. With your paint brush, apply the glue mixture to the tissue paper. Use just enough to wet the tissue. Let dry.
After everything drys, carefully peal the tail off of the wax paper. Glue the turkey tails together. Glue a turkey body to each side of the tail, with the feet sticking out of the bottom. Make sure all your pieces match up. When it dries, it will be ready to hang int the window.
This just a sample of the things you can make. E and I also made leaf sun catchers. These are great for other holidays. Christmas ideas are endless, but here are some I've thought up; The city of Bethlehem, the star of Bethlehem, Christmas trees, ornaments, and candles. For Hanukkah, the star of David, a Menorah, or a dreidel. Let your imagination fly. There is something for every holiday.
